My Response: Suler in Philadelphia

My name is Suler Acosta. I’m a pastor in Philly and went to see Reparando at the Trocadero on March 15. It was an awesome experience. Having been in Guatemala and having met many of the main characters in the documentary, I was impacted again by the heart and soul of Tita and Shorty. The film does not dilute nor distort the reality of their passion for these people. What captivates me about this film is the missional implications watching this film has for my church, for your church. You cannot watch this film and say, “How nice that this is happening in Guatemala. I’m so proud of them.” You can’t sit back, enjoy this film, and then go home thinking all is well in your city and community. This film brings to the foreground the tragedy and the beauty that is so often overlooked by most Guatemalans. This is...

My Response: Tina in Sacramento

My name is Tina Breshears. I’m 22 years old and recently returned to the states after serving for six months as a missionary in Guatemala City, where I had the pleasure of spending two weeks with the Athentikos team during the Guatemalan screenings of “Reparando.” I was first able to see “Reparando” when I snuck in to see it as part of a Christian convention (don’t tell anyone!) back in September or October and then many more times during the screenings with Athentikos in November 2010. I was first interested in seeing “Reparando” because a main part of the film focuses on La Limonada, the slums of Guatemala City, which is also where I worked during my time in Guatemala. I first got introduced to La Limonada through a trip that my US church takes every summer. We usually visit a number of ministries, but La Limonada really stuck out...

Dolls Repaired by Maria the “Doll Lady” Now Available

The Guatemala City Dump is the largest in Central America. 24 football fields would fit within it’s walls. 11,000 people live near and work in the dump as a means for survival. It is here where we found one of the central figures in our documentary. Maria Del Fina Hernandez – affectionately known as the “Doll Lady” uses micro-finance loans from the Potter’s House to buy discarded doll parts, which she cleans, repairs and eventually sells for a small profit. Her story makes the perfect visual metaphor for ‘Reparando’. Athentikos supports Maria’s micro-enterprise by selling her dolls in our online store. Each doll is uniquely hand-made by Maria and is a tangible reminder of how God repairs the broken. You can purchase yours today. Watch the video: Our Guatemalan team recently visited Maria and asked her a few questions on camera. In this video, Maria expresses her gratitude for your help.

My Response: Julie in Michigan

My name is Julie Doll.  My husband and two children live in West Michigan.  I formerly taught first grade before having the honor of becoming a stay at home mom. My husband and I viewed Reparando in October in Grand Rapids, MI.  We enjoy watching documentary films together and as parents of two busy little munchkins, who wouldn’t want a quiet night out at the movies?  Another reason we wanted to see the film was because our church, Immanuel CRC (Hudsonville, MI) encouraged us to go.  We support the missionary work of Joel Van Dyke in Guatemala.  We knew he was part of the film and would be at the screenings in MI.  His passion is inspiring and contagious and we always look forward to hearing from him. At the close of the screening I felt my emotions being stirred up.  I felt inspired. I felt both HELPLESS (because my...
